Canine Disciplines

In the Blue Mountain region we currently utilize three fields of K9 search teams; Airscent, Trailing, and HRD.  Training often takes 18-24 months before a K9 team takes their certification test.

Airscent

Also known as "Area Search", these dogs work a large area relatively quickly by using wind direction to their advantage.  These dogs work off leash, often with a GPS tracker so their handler can see their dog when they range out of sight.

Trailing

Trailing dogs are often scent specific search dogs, meaning they follow a specific human scent trail using a scent article.  When trying to locate a subject, the path that the K9 will take will be very similar to the path the subject took.

HRD

Human remains detection dogs search for decease people by searching for the chemical that is produced from decaying tissue.  These dogs typically work a smaller area than an Airscent dog, but they also use wind direction to their advantage. HRD dogs work on land, water, and snow.
