Airscent

Air scent search dogs work off leash, ranging much as a dog hunting for birds or other critters would. Air scent dogs are taught to hunt for people, using their super noses to catch the scent of the person floating in the air or the scent that was left on the ground. Air scent dogs work the scent to its strongest source (the person) and may range a long distance from their handler. After finding the person the air scent dog is trained to return to the handler and give an indication. Then the handler follows the dog to the person found. Don't be confused if a search dog gets close to you then leaves; the dog is doing what it was trained to do which is go get the handler. When the handler arrives at the lost person the dog is rewarded with a favorite toy, food, or both. Some air scent dogs are trained to find any person they smell, others have additional training to identify the scent of a specific person and find that person.
